Richard A. P. Birkett
Hello! I am a Tamarkin Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Brown University. Previously I was a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I received my PhD in 2023 at the University of Notre Dame working under the supervision of Jeffrey Diller. My research lies within the field of algebraic dynamics, the study of iterated maps on spaces which are defined algebraically. I am especially interested in rational self-maps of varieties (complex dynamics), particularly in higher dimensions, and exploring their connection with non-Archimedean geometry. Often I am concerned with the notions surrounding dynamical complexity such as dynamical degrees, algebraic stability, and modifying surfaces to better understand these. When I am not researching maths or teaching, I like to cycle or brew espresso at home.
